Goal setting; Learning to plan realistically

Today’s my birthday! As I move further into my 30s (and much closer to my 40s), I’ve learned to appreciate personal growth—as small or insignificant as it may seem.

Progressing toward a larger goal in trackable steps or crossing a mini goal off my list has become a great source of inspiration for me, and a confidence-builder.

I decided my birthday was as good of a time as any to write down my goals for the next 12 months, and doing so was also an exercise in self-restraint

As a perfectionist and optimist, I’ve never developed a good goal-building practice. I want to accomplish so much—lose 50 lbs! Save 10K! Become a FT blogger!—that my goals were not attainable and served as a source of stress and self-deprecation.

This year, I looked at everything I’ve accomplished without setting goals: started a blog (again!), shopped small/intentionally, and connected with friends and family more frequently. Imagine what I could do if I made intentional goals, tracked, and/or adjusted them throughout the year?!

So here stands my first-ever realistic goal list. As you can see, the tasks are realistic (exercise 2x/week instead of 5/x), but I still had a hard time keeping the list short!

I am proud to work toward these goals this year, and have also set expectations with myself that I may need to edit, change or remove some goals during the year—and that’s just fine.

My first-step toward accepting my perfectly imperfect self was not starting a fresh sheet of goals when I made two writing mistakes! Small steps still move me forward.

Progress, not perfection, is my battle cry this year. What are some of your goals for the next 12 months, and do you have any inspiration or tips to share?! Xoxo
