Best face sunscreens

At 38, I’m more careful than ever with my skin. Sun spots and hyperpigmentation appear after years of poor sunscreen use and in addition to using potions to get rid of dark spots, I’m also looking to avoid more!

In comes my closest companion as my age climbs: sunscreen. But to wear it every day, I needed one I loved. Here’s all the brands that have made my short list–along with what I like and what needs some work:

Best all around:

EltaMD UV spf 45

What I love: It’s hydrating and great for every day use

Added benefit: I use UV Clear, which also helps with acne. They have other versions, like tinted, sport and glow.

Does it burn eyes: No!

Any downsides? Not reef-safe

Cost: $39

Best for oily, light-colored skin

Supergoop Mattescreen spf 40

What I love: My face gets especially oil with SPF protection, and this keeps the oil at bay! A great matte.

Added benefit: Reef-safe*
*SafetheReef.org lists them as a toxic brand, but I believe they've
updated their formula, as reef-toxic chemicals are not on the ingredient list!
Does it burn eyes: No!

Any downsides? They consider the color universal for most, but after a vacation, it was even too light for my medium-colored olive skin tone

Cost: $38

Best for the beach

algenist sublime defense spf 50

What I love: SPF 50

Added benefit: A little goes a long way! It also kept my husband’s burn-prone skin safe for 10 days in the Hawaiian sun!

Does it burn eyes: No!

Any downsides? Not reef-safe. It makes my skin look extra oily

Cost: $28

Best under makeup

supergoop unseen spf 40

What I love: It’s so soft and velvety, and goes on so smoothly!

Added benefit: A wonderful makeup primer!

Does it burn eyes: No!

Any downsides? Not reef safe. It makes my skin oily.

Cost: $36

These are all a little pricey but last 2-3 months with daily use, and do not burn my eyes like the drugstore brands I’ve tried. Do you have any to add to the list?!
